Reeves claims tax rises will not target working people
Chancellor Rachel Reeves has admitted that the autumn Budget on 30 October will include tax rises, following the publication of the Treasury’s audit into public spending. Speaking on The News Agents podcast, Reeves said ‘I think we will have to increase taxes’ but ruled out any tax increases on ‘working people’, including VAT, income tax and National Insurance. Reeves has not ruled out changes to targeted tax increases to inheritance tax, pension reforms and capital gains tax.
Base rate falls as growth forecast to miss government target
The Bank of England has cut interest rates for the first time since 2020. According to the Bank’s forecasts, the UK economy is expected to grow faster than expected, but will fall short of the Government’s target.
Pro-growth Labour caucus declares war on NIMBYs
A group of 53 backbench Labour MPs have formed a new party caucus, the ‘Labour Growth Group’, aimed at promoting pro-growth and pro-development policies in government. The group includes a number of London MPs and espouses an anti-NIMBY policies, claiming that failure to tackle the blockers will leave Britain "in a trap of low growth".
Lib Dems come out gunning for the Blue Wall
Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey, has said his party is planning to ‘finish the job’ of clearing the ‘Blue Wall’ of Conservative MPs at the next General Election, confirming his intentions to remain Leader of the party and ‘ruthlessly’ target former Conservative heartlands in the south of England.
Government to scrap computing and AI projects
The Government has scrapped plans to invest £1.3bn in AI and technology projects. The plans, announced by the previous government, included funding for the creation of a new exascale supercomputer and funding for AI Research Resource. The Government has said that it is ‘absolutely committed’ to the delivery of technology infrastructure.
